Virtual Villagers 30 December, 2006

Over the last week, I’ve been playing this game called Virtual Villagers by Last Day of Work. Eh.. actually, I haven’t completed Flo on the Go yet, currently at level 27, but I do score expert score for every level up till now. =D So anyway, I played Virtual Villagers. Basically, this game is about a group of 6 people, shipwrecked and found themselves washed ashore on a deserted island. Lame storyline but so be it, it’s the gameplay mechanics that count.

So the idea is, u gotta build a thriving village so that they can survive on their own. First of all, u have to train ur villagers to do some simple tasks so that they can fend for themselves while u r not around. Some basic skills are construction, healing, farming and research. Construction is needed to upgrade huts so that u can increase the population cap for ur village. Healing is needed, well, for healing of course. Farming for farming food. And research to earn tech points to buy new technologies that can help ur village to survive.

The one special thing about this game is that it is real-world-time. I think 1 hour of real world time is equivalent to 1 year of game time. So this means that if u go to work 10 hours a day, by the time u reach home and startup Virtual Villagers, ur ppl would be 10 years older than in the morning when u left them. That’s why its important to teach ur villagers some basic skills so that they can still do something while u r away. Unskilled villagers will just do nothing and relax the whole day. Interesting game right? U have to remember to breed new villagers as well, else ur older villagers will die of old age. These are all summarized in the tutorial in the game.

Along the way, there will be 16 puzzles to solve. They sorta set goals for u so that u won’t feel bored and aimless just looking at ur villagers everyday. Some goals are easy, like constructing a new hut. But some are more difficult, like learning how to fish for food.

Overall, I enjoyed the gameplay. The graphics are quite lousy but still passable. But one thing is I can hardly distinguish the males from the females, this makes mating a bit more troublesome cos I have to check the details (gender and age) of each villager from a separate menu. The real world time gimmick achieved what it set out to do as I find myself constantly worrying whether my villagers are going well and really couldn’t wait to reach home each day to check on them. But then, the novelty wore out in few days. In the sound department, nothing spectacular, in fact pretty monotonus. One other thing is the rather weak pacing of the game. There seems to be a hundred and one things to do in the early game, farming, constructing, research. Towards the mid game, the main focus is really just breeding and increasing ur population. In the end game, there’s really nothing left to do while u wait for ur research points to acculmulate in order to buy the last few extremely expensive technologies to complete the game. There’s not much replay value either since u would have already know exactly how to beat the game after completing it once. In the end, not as entertaining as Flo on the Go, but still managed to grab my attention for about 1 week. I give it 3 out of 5 Gamepads.

One tip to conclude this review. When u r mating ur villagers, u dun have to wait for them to go indoors to see if the woman will have a baby. Just take note of ur population count before mating, then repeatedly drag the male over the female until ur population increases by 1. These means a new baby is born, much faster than to wait for them to walk indoors.

Wah… recently Dear1 and Dear2 seems to be playing alot of games ah. No good orgh. Must learn how to manage our time properly. Dear2 never play Virtual Villagers lah, only Dear1 played. Hehe… actually, Dear1 is the one that plays alot of games, different games. Dear2 prefers to play simpler games like Flo on the Go but she’s very good at them. Dear1 has uninstalled Virtual Villagers becos I’ve completed it and there’s no incentive to replay it. Haha… I just bought a new pair of PS2 lookalike gamepads remember? So now I playing Pro Evolution Soccer 6 for the PC. Pro Evolution Soccer is just the European market name for Winning Eleven, they are the same game.

I hope Dear2 will play soccer game with me someday. Goal!!!!! =D

Intermediate Google command tips 29 December, 2006

So many people use Google everyday. Me too! Most people only know how to search by keywords. Me too… But this morning I just found out more useful features about Google search! I may be a few years slow in realizing this but still, let me share my happy discovery with everyone. Remove the quotes when u try my examples in Google.

Do you know that Google can act as a dictionary? Hahaha… It can! So interesting. U just have to prefix the word u want to find by ‘define:’. For example, type ‘define:speaker’ in the Google search box and the definition of the word ‘speaker’ will be returned as the result.

Do you know that Google is also a scientific calculator? Just try it out. Type ’1+2*3′. A non-scientific calculator will do the addition first then multiplication giving answer 9, but a scientific calculator will multiply first then add, answer is 7. U can also try logarithms and trigonometry, all can work. Try ‘cos pi’, answer is -1. Remember standard is radians.

Do you know that Google can convert currency? I use this quite alot because I want to find out the cost of Gundam model kits in Singapore dollar. Sing dollar is SGD. To convert 1600 yen to sgd, type ’1600 yen in sgd’. Of course, u can convert any other currencies u like as long as u know the correct abbreviation to use. For example, ’30 usd in sgd’ converts 30 US dollars to Singapore dollars. :D

Do you know that Google can convert metric as well? Wow… If only I’ve discovered this earlier. Ultra ultra useful, especially for Dear1 and Dear2 cos we are doing our renovations. I dunno why but renovators like to speak in terms of inches and feet, but we’re more used to cm and metres. So, to convert 15 inches to cm, use’ 15 inch in cm’. Easy right? Scientific units also can yo! Try ’1 atm in pascal’ to convert atmospheric pressure to pascal units. I think there are many more, u have to try then find out. Google is smart enough to figure out ’3 ampere * 5 ohms’ is 15 volts. Yes, it knows the correct units too.

Do you know u can restrict Google search to a specific website? Like for example, u want to find out about admission to NUS, this is what u type, ‘site:www.nus.edu.sg admission’. The syntax is to prefix the website u want to search with ‘site:’, then followed by the keyword u want to search. Note there is no space after the colon. So ‘site:www.singnet.com.sg broadband price’ will tell Google to perform a search using the keywords ‘broadband’ and ‘price’ within the website ‘www.singnet.com.sg’. Useful ya?

Haha… I know some computer science ppl will use google as a data mining tool, but for us normal peasants, we just need to find what we want faster and more accurately. Hope everyone can benefit from these tips. :D

p/s: try also ‘population of singapore’ :P

Why Dear2 cannot write new posts these few days? 28 December, 2006

Hehe… Let me answer this question on behalf of Dear2.

  1. Earthquake in Taiwan 2 days ago has damaged major submarine cables connecting the various parts of east Asia. Even the backup cables are damaged. As least for us in Singapore, internet connectivity has been up and down. I personally dun think the situation will improve for at least a few more days while the ISPs are rerouting the traffic. And it won’t be a few weeks down the road for the submarine cables to be fully functionally again.
  2. Dear2′s laptop is sent for servicing. Dear2 bought her laptop in March this year, so luckily it was still under warranty and servicing is free of charge. Yeah. So, the problem is with the sound. When the laptop is first switched on, the sound is good. But some time later, static will start to appear, and it’ll emit this irritating high pitched noise that u cannot turn off. Even when we shut down all forms of sound producing programs like Windows Media Player, Real Player, Quicktime, Internet Explorer, etc… the static noise is still there! It’s becoming quite a nuisance so we decided to bring it down for servicing. The Twinhead serviceman is unable to reliably diagnose the source of the problem on the spot, so we had to leave the laptop with them. It should take about 3 days to get back to us but… remember that 1 Jan and 2 Jan are both public holidays, so we may have to wait until next Thur or Fri to get the laptop back. So Dear2 got no computer to use these few days.

Anyways, after visiting the servicing centre at Burlington Square, we dropped by Sim Lim Square to shop shop. And I bought this Made In China PS2 lookalike Dual Shock Controllers. It was selling at $14 for 1 controller and $26 for 2 controllers. Hmm… So I was thinking, I can get the 2 controllers pack so that I can play Winning Eleven on my PC with Dear2. Gee… So I bought the 2 controllers pack. Once I reached home, I eagerly open up the package to try out my new controllers. But what a shock I had! The 2 controllers are connected!!! Controller 2 is connected to Controller 1, and Controller 1 has a USB connector that goes to the PC. Felt so cheated. Not my ideal configuration but at least it works.

Oh well… If anyone decides to buy this 2 controller package, do take note that it’s not going to be 2 separate controllers, they’re actually connected ‘twins’.

New Year Resolutions 2007 26 December, 2006

It’s the end of the year, and it’s the beginning of a new year.  As we do our annual spring cleaning to clear away all the old or unwanted clothes and stuff so as to make way for new year clothes, we do the same to past year’s new year resolutions and write the new new year resolutions on a fresh piece of paper.

Dear2 only started to set written new year resolutions in 2006.  At the end of the year, about 50% of the resolutions were fulfilled, 40% unmet as some circumstances had changed and 10% not met because not enough effort was made to fulfil it.

New year resolutions are meant as a push motivation to bring us forward, to make us give that extra effort, and to keep us focus on our tracks.  We are happy when resolutions are met, and we only regret that time is not enough when the resolution is not met at the end of the year.   Along the course of the way, some circumstances change, and we adjust accordingly, striving to make the best of the situation even though the goal now deviates from the original resolution.  “Process over result.”

A trainer once told me, decide on a date for the last day of your year, and a date for the first day of your year.  Finish up whatever things you wanna do for the old year by the last day.  And when your new year starts on the first day, it is a new year afresh.

To welcome the new year afresh, Dear1 and Dear2 has set our new year resolutions.  Some of the resolution are joint work, some are personal goals.  Let me start listing the joint ones:

  1. Exercise once a week
  2. Take part in at least one marathon
  3. Confirm wedding dinner venue
  4. Go for honeymoon and bridal photo shoot
  5. Move into our new house

Dear1′s personal new year resolutions are:

  1. Pass Qualifying Exam
  2. Publish one paper
  3. Start an investment plan

Dear2′s resolution:

  1. Get a new job and stay on
  2. Learn cooking
  3. Go for facial
  4. Start an insurance and a savings plan
  5. Be positive

Dear2 believes that new year resolutions should be clear, if possible, put a quantum to it.  It’s no point saying that you wanna loss weight, but by how much?? Losing 1kg is also losing weight.  And it is essential to write it down in a place where you remember so that along the year, you may view it to remind yourself of the goals set.  Jiayou everyone!!

Tumbling Tower 25 December, 2006

While we were out shopping yesterday, we saw alot of ppl queueing outside Toy”R”Us. After some careful examination, we discovered that they are actually queueing for the free gift wrapping services. Haha… Anyway, we decided to take a walk in Toy”R”Us to see if there’s anything worth buying.

Actually, I think TRU sells toys quite expensively. Nothing caught our eyes. Everything is being sold at the recommended retail price. Grr… Abruptly, Dear1 stopped in front of the Lego section. The Lego City series are on sale!!! And they come in package deals. If I remember correctly, there’s an “Emergency rescue package” consisting of 1 Police Motorcycle, 1 Police Car, 1 Detective Car, 1 Fire Rescue Helicopter, 1 Ambulance and 1 Doctors Car. Price I forgot liao… but it’s quite worthwhile, got some overall discount. But I didn’t buy it. Dear1 and Dear2 both liked the Lego City series very much, it’s so much more interesting than the Harry Potter series, the Medieval series, the Star Wars series, etc. Perhaps we’re both engineers that’s why we liked the City series. Check it out here. Anyway, we decided not to spend unnecessarily becos we’re still renovating and furnishing our house.

As we continued walking, we came across a yet more attractive package! It’s the “City Airport Package”. This one consists of 1 City Airport, 1 Fire Rescue Helicopter, 1 Airport Fire Truck and 1 Airplane Mechanic. This package cost a hefty $199.90. But the good thing is this set got an actual landscape, the Airport. Whereas the previous set is all made up of vehicles. Huhuhu… I want to buy this set… But cannot. Money is better spent on furniture. Meanwhile, another couple walked past. The boyfriend caught sight of the airport package. He stopped to examine the huge box. Look up, look down, look left, left right… As a guy, I can tell that he wanted to buy it, but alas, the girlfriend is watching… After some hesitation, he finally pop the question, whispering to his girlfriend,”My birthday is coming…” Hehe… See! Guys want to receive a Lego set as their birthday present. My birthday also coming… but cannot anyhow spend $. We carried on walking, but I hoped that guy’s girlfriend will get him that gift. Gee…

Just as we were nearing the exit, I saw this attractive blue metal tin that says Tumbling Tower. It’s made by a company called Pavilion. Basically, it’s a Jenga variant. It contains 48 wood pieces in 3 colours and comes with a coloured dice. And it cost $6.95 after a 20% discount. Ohh… this got me excited. I’ve always wanted a Jenga set. Not to be hasty, I went arond TRU to search for the original Jenga. Found it! It contains 54 wood pieces in 1 colour, no dice, packaged in a cupboard box and costs $20 something. Wah… So much difference ah. No need to consider liao, I confirm buy the Tumbling Tower. Dear2 also wanted it, so we both agreed. So we bought it. Yeah… We wanted to queue up for the free gift wrap for our little self-Christmas-present, but the queue is longer than before we entered, so nvm.

Tumbling Tower

Last night, we eagerly unwrapped our Tumbling Tower tin. The wooden pieces are well made, heavy enough too. The colours are well painted too. But one thing about the dice is, we think it’s biased, blue colour came up way too often. Some of the wooden pieces varied in dimensions but it did not spoil the game becos the weight distribution of the wooden tower during the game is uneven too. Maybe the metal tin is not too well suited to contain these wooden blocks as we experience some difficulty in keeping the pieces back into the tin. The wood smells a little, but still tolerable, I suppose it’ll fade away with more use. Overall, it’s a great value game for just $6.95, no complains. We played 5 very fun games last night, Dear1, Dear2 and sister. The final score is Dear1 tumble 2 times, Dear2 tumble 2 times, sister tumble 1 time. So the winner is sister!

A quick search on the internet revealed that Pavilion make quite a number of such classic games, and cheaply too. Many can be found at TRU. Maybe we will consider getting more. :D

Today is house washing day 24 December, 2006

A minor update on our renovations. Today they are doing acid washing for our house, meaning it’s going to be completed soon. Yeah… On our last visit, the lights, aircon and kitchen cabinet is being installed. So the works that are left are, kitchen solid table top, glass partition, glass door, bedroom wardrobe, shoe cabinet, tv console and ceiling fans. Sounds like alot of work, but at least most of the messier works are already completed.

The workers are really quite busy these days, even have to work on Sundays (today) and I suspect tomolo on Christmas as well. I guess this is becos the Chinese New Year is coming and many home owners want their house ready for the Chinese New Year. Hence, reno contractors are generally busier during this year end festive season. Luckily for us, we started our reno abit earlier than the year end rush. Typically, a fully renovated house like ours takes between 6 to 8 weeks to complete, including delays. Our house has already been delayed, our ID initially said that he can hand over to us on 26 Dec. Grr… But now it looks like we might have to wait until early Jan as an optimistic estimate. Nvm. Good worksmanship is more important than hasty hand over.

Check out our reno photos! :D

Praise for Design Lights 23 December, 2006

Yippee.  We had our lights installed on Thur.  Finally our house is looking more and more complete.

Dear1 and Dear2 purchased 90% of our lighting accesories from this shop Design Lights at IMM, and to-date, we are pretty satisfied by their services and products.  Our ID reccommended us this place, for their prices are considered cheap in IMM.  The exterior decoration of this shop pales in comparison to all its neighbours, but on entering the shop, the design and selection of their lighting accesories is no less lacking.   We bought 10 down lights, toilet and storeroom lights, kitchen main light and doorbell, all at prices lower than what we saw elesewhere.  And all the lightings come with free bulbs, saving us the $ and effort to get the bulbs separately.  Heehee.

Ok, enough of praise for Design Lights, let’s talk about our outing for today.  Dear1 and Dear2 went to the Singapore Science Centre this afternoon, specially to view the iFuture exhibition which is open from now till Mar07.  Dear2 saw this phamplet on the bus which gives $1 off on ticket price, thus thought that it might be worth a tour.  Fyi, the ‘i’ in iFuture means Infocomm.  But alas, the iFuture exhibition is a bit disappointing; there wasn’t much spectucular exhibits in both the iSpace and iFuture gallery.  Rather, Dear1 and Dear2 found more entertainment and knowledge in the main galleries of the Science Centre. with the marvels and games found in The Human Body, Energy Place, Aviation, Marine Gallery and many more.  Wow, although the main building of the Science Centre  has remained unchanged, the variety of subjects they exhibit today has developed so much over the years, and is quite different from the Science Centre which we used to visit so often during our Secondary School days.  Interesting.
