Our Nokia 6288 21 June, 2007

Dear1 and Dear2 got a pair of Nokia 6288 as our 9th Anniversary couple gift. We’ve always wanted to get a pair of matching handphones for ourselves and now we’ve finally got it. The Nokia 6288 comes in 2 colours, black and white. Hence, we bought both versions and Dear1 ended up with the black version and Dear2 is using the white one.
After using it for about a month, here’s what I think of it. Firstly, the 6288 is just a slightly upgraded version of the 6280 which was released some time earlier. Some ppl say 6288 is just a firmware upgrade of the 6280, but there are some other minor hardware changes, more info can be found from the internet. To some ppl, it may be more worthwhile getting the now cheaper 6280 and upgrading the firmware to the latest one, which 6288 is also running the exact same firmware. I think that’s a great idea to save money too. After all, the hardware changes are really minor. But then, we wanted to get a discounted purchase price from our telco, therefore we decided to get the 6288 from the M1 shop with line instead of 6280 from regular handphone shops but without line. 6288 also allows upgrading of firmware over the internet, which I did, and am using the latest v6.10.
The first thing that struck us is the 5 minutes free M1 to M1 video calls. We’ve tested out the feature a few times and found the video and audio quality quite good. However, there are some parts of Singapore (Dear1’s parents house) that doesn’t receive 3G network and hence cannot make video calls.
The processor on this phone is quite speedy, unlike my previous previous T610 which was really sluggish. As such, I enjoy using this phone quite a lot. I think some ppl out there may argue that 6288 doesn’t have a really fast processor. Yes, I agree, but it’s good enough for our usage.
Next, 2 megapixel camera. Hehe… Another great plus point. Now we can use our phone as a decent camera and go around snapping photos of places or of each other. Our previous phones, Samsung D510 and Sony Ericsson K300i just doesn’t sport a good enough camera for everyday use. Another great thing about 6288 is that it features 640×480 video, which is the largest I have seen so far amongst video phone.
Then there’s a miniSD card slot. The internal memory of the 6288 is just plain lousy. Even the free 64Mb card that comes with the phone package is just not enough for use. Hence, Dear1 bought a 2Gb card and Dear2 bought a 1Gb card from Sim Lim Square. 2Gb is the largest capacity supported by the phone.
Using the SUPER video convertor, Dear1 has managed to convert some video files downloaded from the internet to *.3gp files that can be played on the 6288. The conversion is good and now, I have quite a number of video that I can enjoy using my phone on long bus rides. The formats I’ve tried converting from includes avi, flv, rmvb and mkv. So far so good.
Dear2 is also very fascinated by the radio function. Actually, Dear1 too. This is because neither of us have used a phone that comes with a FM radio before. And surprisingly, the audio quality is actually quite good, both through the handsfree set and the built in loudspeaker. That being said, the loudspeaker is really not bad. No wonder u see so many young punks nowadays blasting loud irritating music from their handphones in public places.
Generally, I think this is quite a good phone. There are some complains though. First, the video and music player doesn’t allow fast forward and rewind. This greatly reduces listening and watching pleasure. Imagine being interrupted by a phone call in the middle of a 1 hr video clip, u gotta rewatch everything from the start! Second, the form factor is a little on the large side and slightly heavy. This could lead to some discomfort during prolong usage. Third, the organizer isn’t really well thought out enough. It works well, but sometimes it takes a little too many clicks to get from writing a note to taking a weekly view and back to monthly view. One more, there isn’t any realtime call summary for voice calls. This means that I can’t track how many minutes I’ve been talking and I won’t know when to hang up the call.
Nonetheless, this is the first couple handphone that we’ve gotten together and we just really liked it. :D

how do you activate the loudspeaker.manualdoesnt tell you!!??
Hi Robin cole,
Do u mean loudspeaker mode in radio? It’s in “options” (left soft key). Or can u describe ur problem more specifically, so I know exactly which loudspeaker option u r referring to.
-Dear1
I wish to make an errata here.
The video player doesn’t allow fast forward nor rewind, this is true. But the music player can! In the music player, u just need to highlight the ‘next track’ button, it looks like this >>|. Then press and hold the centre soft key and the music track will fast forward in 5 sec steps. Similarly, if u press and hold on the |<< button, the track will rewind in 5 sec steps. As far as I know, there’s no way to assign how many seconds to step forward or backwards, it’s fixed at 5 secs. Well, this is better than nothing at all. Cheers!

Hi,
regardin the video watching, there are some tricks
u can”chop” the video to intervals like 10min each or even 5 mins.
thn u convert into mpeg4 or 3ggp format.
i often go to vixy.net and youtube.com to get some MTVs to download and watch in my 6280
first, u go to http://www.youtube.com to find a video which you want to download and watch on ur handphone eg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0AEfAVDOX8
then u open up vixy.net and paste the link to the area where you are able to input the link. Then u choose 3GP for the converting file. HOWEVER, there are times where by the server might be busy or say header error or say video URL cant be resolve etc etc. IGNORE those and open a new windows and try again. IT WILL WORK. just that the server at youtube and their server always busy.
Enjoy playing with ur deardear.
Cheerios
ohh yah
forgot to add that after converting, it will ask u to download it. Download it and DUN rename it first. Duno why, for some reason for me, it wont download complete if i rename it and download. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, dun close that PARTICULAR windows. Just download finished before closing that particular windows
Hi Eugene,
Thanks for the great tips! So it’s kinda like a ‘manual’ fast forward instead of automatic fast forward. So to fast forward 5 mins, I’m effectively selecting the next video file right? Does vixy.net automatically chop the video into 5 mins chunks? I can’t seem to find an option to do this on the website.

dear1dear2,
hai, i just bought my 6288 last week. i encountered a problem where by i upgrade my memory card from 64MB to 2G. After i replace the memory card with 2G, i cant start my Music Player (right click menu). Is that i can play my Mp3 with the 64Mb card? how i can enable back the music player after swap from nokia mini SDcard to my new SD Card?
Besides that, seem like we cant really transfer the file in original 64MB card to our new card right? becoz i love the butterfly.nth but somehow i not manage to copy to my new SD card. Shall i download from internet?
Hi Edmund,
The problem regarding ur music player seems weird, I don’t think it should happen. Did u try the traditional method of going to Menu>Media>Music Player instead of using the shortcut keys? Otherwise I’m afraid I can’t help u on this one. Keep on trying.
Regarding file transfer, I’ve done it before. If I remember correctly, I did it using a computer. Just plug in the 64Mb card to a computer and copy the themes out, then later copy the themes to ur new memory card. I think there are some permission levels that’s set by the manufacturers that we can’t change, so not all gallery items can be copied. Alternatively, u can download from the internet, there’s plenty of custom made themes that looked great.

Dear1,
I also surprise that i encountered this kind of funny problem. The music player should store in the HP instead of the External Memory card, anyhow i will try how to make it work. thank you.
Hi D1&2
I recently got mine and i find that there r some features that this new 6288 cant do as compared to my old fone the 3230..With my 3230, i cld play my music files by making a track list…and then lock the fone..this fone doesnt allow that…i have to stay on the music window..
Shareefah> I have no problems playing music with a locked phone. Go to music player and start playing ur music, after that just press ‘back’ to exit to the standby screen, the music will continue playing. From there just lock the phone as usual. Please try it again, there really shouldn’t be a problem.

1 question: My nokia go on crash when I see a movie mp4 on full screen in about 12 min.(resol. 320×240 18fr 320br mono 128kb)
hi this is Baskar, i’ve got a brand new nokia 6288. when i open the media player it plays all 3gp videos but i cannot fast forward or rewind the videos, i can only forward or rewind to the next video and cant forward within the same video. can it be resolve or it is a flaw in 6288?? please help.
Damiano> I not so sure about the crash becos my phone has never crashed before. If possible, u can try to upgrade to the latest firmware. Mine is v6.10.
Basker> If u search on the internet hard enough, u should have already realized by now that fast forward and rewind is not possible with the 6288 currently. There isn’t any official reason for it but I’m guessing it’s a software limitation, otherwise the developers should have done it already looking at the strong demand for this feature.

thanks for your help. dear one . take care. bye

I think it is best that u bring ur problem down to ur local Nokia service centre for them to address this problem. It does seem rather serious to me.
-Dear1

eugene> There is no FF function in 6288. And there never is going to be. Sad, but true.
