Our Tefal Oven 27 September, 2007

Yeah… we’ve finally bought our baking oven. Yes, this oven will be used for baking bread, cookies, cakes and whatever else that needed baking. The oven we bought is the Tefal Activys OV100030 going at $199 from Best Denki for the Hari Raya special, usual price $299.

There are a few reasons why we chose this oven. Firstly, we’ve always been looking for ovens that have more than the standard 2 heating coils on top. This oven has 4 heating coils on top and this means that it cooks better and provides more evenly distributed heat. The second good thing is that it comes with 4 heating coils on the bottom as well. Most ovens that have 4 coils on top tend to have only 2 coils below, which might result in the top being more cooked than the bottom. Thirdly, the heating coils on this oven is bend-able, so it is easy to clean. Not to mention it has self cleaning wall functions, meaning that we just have to preheat the oven and the oil stains on the walls will soften and become easier to wipe off with paper towel. It also comes with the rotisserie to grill a chicken or perhaps just some chicken wings.

The capacity is 26 litres, which makes it quite value for money. But the thing is, when we brought the oven home and unpack it, we realises that it is in fact rather big in size. Placing is beside the fridge on our dry kitchen top will take up almost 1/3 of the table space, not such a good idea. So instead, we place the oven on the washing machine. Haha… Laundry and food so close to each other, have to be extra careful when dealing with food from now on. The top of the front load washing machine is meant for placing a dryer, so I’m sure that it can withstand the weight of a small little oven. But to protect the washing from the heat of the oven, I think we’ll get a corkboard from the bookshop and place it between the bottom of the oven and the top of the washing machine.

I suppose one of the features that this oven is lacking is the internal blowing fan which is suppose to circulate the air and make the food cook better and tastier. Also, there’s not vapour action in this oven which might mean that our food will be less juicy and tender. But then, we’re just beginners when it comes to these baking and grilling stuff so I think this is a great entry oven for us. Once we know the inside outs of baking and grilling, then we’ll know exactly what kind of oven we need, and then we’ll get a really good one that suits all our criteria.

One odd thing that I’ve discovered is that, searching for this model of oven on the internet yields ‘No English results’. Hmm… So many it’s a product made for some other specific markets. But the saleslady told us that this is a new product from Tefal and that this is an introductory offer promotion. Well, this is not the first time I’ve encountered an item that cannot be found from an English speaking country. Anyway, as long as the quality control is well done, it doesn’t really matter if this oven is a parallel import or not. There’s a one year warranty so that’s good enough for us. Oh, and by the way, this oven is manufactured in China.

The 10mins after the morning alarm 21 September, 2007

RINGGGGGGGGGGGGGG~~~~~

Dear1 stretches out to press the snooze button on the alarm. Immediately, Dear1 places his finger on the snooze button on the second alarm clock, sleepily awaiting its wake up call.

Lalala~lallalaa~~~~~ (one of the songs from Hajime no Ippo)

With great familiarity, Dear1 pushes on the snooze button on his black Nokia 6288 and continues his sleep. In his mind, Dear1 is chanting, “One more snooze, one more snooze.”

Dear1 and Dear2 sets 2 alarm clock every night in case that they both missed the alarm and overslept. And since there is no proper alarm clock in the house, Dear1 and Dear2 uses their handphones instead. Both are set to the same alarm time for the next morning. The thing is, both handphones’ clock differ by less than 10 seconds. So, whenever Dear2’s white 6288 rings, Dear1’s alarm tone will follow shortly after. And yes, Dear2’s alarm tone is just the standard ring while Dear1’s alarm tone is usually some pop-of-the-moment songs. Gee…

There is a major difference in both handphones however. Dear1’s snooze interval is set to 5mins whereas Dear2’s snooze interval is set to 10mins. Due to this, the first ringing of the phones will be simultaneous. 5mins later, Dear1’s phone will ring, 10mins later, both phones will ring together again. Under normal circumstances, Dear1 will always wait for one snooze before waking up. So this is what follows…

Lalala~laalallaaa~~~~

Dear1 stretches out yet again to turn the alarm clock off, but this time the off button. With that, Dear1 slowly crawls out of bed and places the white handphone nearer to somewhere within Dear2’s reach distance. Dear1 then drags his feet to the kitchen and prepares 3 cups worth of water for boiling. After setting the kettle to boil, Dear1 makes his way to the master bedroom toilet to brush his teeth. Feeling more afreshed, Dear1 returns to the kitchen to brew some instant morning Nescafe kopi. Just around this time…

RINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG~~~~~~~~~~

Dear2 stretches out her arm to press the off button on her alarm and switches her phone on for the day. Occasionally, Dear2 actually goes back to sleep. Now that both alarms are off, the only remaining ‘alarm clock’ is Dear1. After making kopi, Dear1 will proceed to shake Dear2 awake. Shake shake her arm, shake shake her body, shake shake her buttocks, shake shake. Naturally and effortlessly, Dear2 rises her arm and press all five fingers together a few times in a fluid, well-rehearsed motion. That is Dear2’s 5min snooze signal to Dear1 the alarm clock. Gee…

Dear1 usually agrees and moves to the living room to switch on the Tv for their morning dose of news. Meanwhile, Dear1 also walks around the house and does some morning chores like washing overnight dishes and cups, pick up the laundry, pack the bags, prepare some breakfast and choose what to wear for the day.

Sometimes, when the 5mins is up and Dear1 goes to wake Dear2 again, she will signal for yet another 5 more minutes. Gee… But most of the time, before the 5mins is up, Dear2 would have already gotten up on her own and making her way to the morning toilet. A short while later, a pretty and refresh Dear2 will join Dear1 on the sofa in the living, drink kopi, eat breakfast, watch news, and get ready for the day ahead.

This is what usually happens in the morning. At least on weekdays. Gee…

The 10mins after the morning alarm is the best time to go back to sleep.

Back with Morries 20 September, 2007

I’m back with more varieties of Morries products that I caught over the past weeks. Check back here for my previous coverages.

image031.jpgimage033.jpgimage034.jpgimage032.jpg

Some time last week or so, I walked by a NTUC bazaar over at the foyer of Bukit Panjang Plaza and there was lots and lots of new, never seen before Morries products. Coffee maker, sandwich maker, juicer, ovens, bbq kits, more fans and cookers and steamboats, etc. But I couldn’t take any pictures there, too many employees walking around. But I did visit the NTUC itself inside BPP and the products were all there, but again, I didn’t take any pictures. So if anyone is curious, just pop down to take a look for yourself.

These products I’m covering here is, as usual, from Clementi. The first we see is a Multi-Function Kettle @ $16.90. Hmm… I’m wondering just how many functions this kettle really has, but I’m guessing it’s limited to boiling water and keeping warm. But wouldn’t that be exactly the same as the Airpot? Maybe this kettle can double as a steamboat? I dunno. The next picture is actually a combine picture of 2 irons. The top one is a Steam Iron with Spray for $12.90 while the bottom one is a Dry Iron with Spray for $9.90. I suppose the difference in price between these two reflects exactly the difference in functions. I doubt that there is other material and component differences. Next is a 16inch Velocity Fan @ $55.00. This box doesn’t come with the usual colour printed Morries box, making it much less attractive. In fact, I almost missed out this item with I was walking around. The last one is a large 5litres Airpot selling for $39.90. It’s… erm, a very large airpot. I dunno what else to say.

Going around taking pictures of Morries products is fun, to collect a catalog of all available items is also fun. I think that’s really an important aspect of the way I do things. I want to compile a complete collection of items, and I take satisfaction from being able to make the most complete collection in the most efficient manner. One example is our list of popcorn prices. Another collection I’m currently having now is the 1/144 HG Gundam series from Cosmic Era, I should really take a photo of the boxes and post them here. In fact, that’s the reason why I created the Japanese tag in the first place. I had initially wanted to talk about my Gundam collection, but have never gotten to it. Morries, well, I may continue uploading the pictures as and when I see them on the streets, but I’ll probably save on the discussion from now onwards. I dun see much purpose in describing each and every product anymore. では、また。

I want to eat Mooncakes 14 September, 2007

I like to eat mooncakes. And because they’re such seasonal products, we only get to eat mooncakes once a year for about a period of 1 month. All the more reason that we should eat as many mooncakes as we want during this season. If I’m not wrong, Mooncake Festival, or Mid Autumn Festival falls on 25 Sept 2007 this year, which is the 15th day of the 8th month in the Lunar Calendar. That’s about 2 weeks from now.

For all those that have boyfriends/girlfriends/husbands/wives, it’s the time of the year to make ur in-laws happy. Regardless of whether your other half remembers to buy a box of mooncakes for ur parents or not, u should make an effort to buy a box of mooncakes for ur own parents, and claim that it’s from ur other half. Haha… Yes, help ur other half score points! Then, u must remember to buy a box of mooncakes for ur other half’s parents too. OMG! That means u r spending twice the money. It’s okay. Firstly, it creates a good impression on both sides of the family. Second, such money can easily be recover by getting ur other half to pay for shopping trips for the coming weeks or so.

Now, what mooncakes to choose? Nowadays, there are so many flavours of mooncakes out there, really very hard to choose. I think the best way is to go out there and try out all the samples before deciding. Personally, I hate to eat small tiny little cuboids of mooncakes measuring 5mm by 5mm by 5mm. Can’t taste the mixture of flavours at all, it’s either all lotus paste, all yolk or all skin, what’s the point? I prefer shops that generously offers 1/16 of a mooncake as samples. Either can cut it into 8’s then slice horizontally across, or simply cut into 16’s. Flavoured mooncakes, to me, are more for personal appreciation, meaning for me to eat. As gifts, I think it is better to go for traditional flavours, maybe 1 plain lotus, 2 single yolk, and maybe 1 double yolk or random. Also, the outlook becomes important since it’s a gift. That’s why many hotels’ mooncake boxes look that nice, but they’re expensive too. As gifts, maybe it isn’t so suitable to get from a neighbourhood confectionary, eventhough they’re cheap and taste great too. Try getting something more reputable so that the receipent goes, “Wow!”, rather than “Huh?”.

I like to eat mooncakes with yolks, double yolks the best. And I like the skin slightly charred, lotus paste not too sweet. But I dun really like the gua-zi inside. The snow skin mooncakes are also fine with me but I tend to get sick of them after say 3 to 4 wholes. Hmm… Generally, I like my mooncakes cut into 8’s and I tend to finish an entire mooncake in one sitting. While watching tv at night, I think I can easily gobble up 2 to 3 mooncakes. As such, I think I better stick with eating the cheaper varieties of mooncakes rather than those Sharks’ Fin or Birds’ Nest mooncakes. Haha…

I think prices should be peaking right now being so near to the actual day. I like to eat mooncakes, they happen once a year, and they’re so expensive before the actual day. On the eve or the eve’s eve, things start to get cheap and it’s the best time to buy in. But then, the freshness also start decreasing. After the eve, the shop no longer makes mooncakes and those still being sold are probably leftovers, while the price continues to fall. Such is the dilemma, quality and price are tradeoffs. So far, my mooncake count this year is 3, I want to eat more.

Shape Run 2007 in 1hr18min 11 September, 2007

Last Sunday, Dear2 participated in the Shape Run. Since it was a women only event, I couldn’t run together with my dear. Actually, I had wanted to, but on reading the race etiquette that came with the race pack, it specifically say that “No men allowed.” So that means I cannot run with my dear. Nevertheless, on the morning of the run, I still dressed in jogging gear, hoping that many 老公(s) like myself would also be thinking of running together and I can also mix into the crowd. But wrong again, at the start point, all the 老公(s) were waiting on the sidelines and the Shape Run truly was a women only run.

Anyway, my purpose of the day was to support Dear2 and that was what I intend to do. The distance is 10km and Dear2 estimated that she’ll be returning around 1hr20mins. Just to be on the safe side, I started waiting for Dear2 from the 30mins mark. Many runners ran past but still no sign of Dear2. The time was already 8.15am and the sun is quite hot by now. Where is Dear2? And all of a sudden, I spotted Dear2 in a distance. I waved at Dear2 but she was too tired to respond eventhough she saw me. I quickly ran alongside Dear2 and ran the last 150 metres together. Dear2 completed 10km in 1hr18min. Wow! This is the first time Dear2 took part in an event alone and she set a new record for our per km timing. So proud of my dear. Gee…

After that, we went to collect the free Vitagen and goodie bag. The queue system was rather well thought out. Although the queue was long, it was moving quite swiftly. Within minutes, we got our vitagen. Next, we moved to the Marina Square atrium to collect the goodie bag. It was a little far away, could have been better if its at the same location as the end point of the race. But the good thing about Marina Square is that there is aircon. Haha… The queue is split into 2 collection counters, and again, the queue moved quite smoothly. Thumbs up for the good organization. The goodie bag is also surprisingly good, with lots of little bottles of product samples (facial, shampoo, toothpaste, etc) and quite a number of discount vouchers. The sling bag was quite nice as well if a little loud in colour, and there’s some food and drinks in there too, Pokari Sweat and Kellogs cornflakes, definitely one of the better endowed goodie bags thus far.

Later in the day, I went on my oen jogging training around our neighbourhood and this time, Dear2 was there to support me. We both really need to keep up with our training to prepare ourselves for the full marathon. Training is not only about building up and conditioning the body, but also to prevent injuries. I ran the same ~7km route that we first charted out 2 weeks ago, this time with timing. I complete the route in 53mins. From now onwards, we must start a little training booklet and keep track of all the training routes, distance and timings and races that we ran.

Meeting some exchange students 8 September, 2007

It’s the first time I’ve ever signed up for such a program. Some students from Japan are here for a visit and the department was calling for volunteers to bring them around school. After some considerations, I decided to give it a shot and have some opportunity to interact with people from other countries and also to put into practise some of my basic Japanese that I’ve learnt over the past months.

The actual day of the exchange was 2 days ago. I was quite surprised at their travel schedule though. Something like they were in South East Asia for 1 week. 4 days in Malaysia and 2 days in Singapore. Only 2 days! That’s very very short. And they’re only in my school for one morning, effectively only about 2hours.

We brought them to various places in school, went to the canteen for some local food like niang dou fu and vegetarian rice with lots of mock meat, went to queue up for free milo and visit the central bookshop to get some souvenirs. After that, we went for some local desserts like ice kachang and mango sago. The Japanese students really cannot take spicy food. They find even the curry sauce that we always eat mixed vegetable rice spicy.

It was a short 2 hours, but I had much fun. At first, it was really really difficult to communicate. My lousy Japanese can hardly be understood by them. But their English was as bad as my Japanese and I couldn’t understand them either. Haha… It’s more of body language and hand gestures that brought the messages across. But it’s great to make new friends, my first Japanese friends. Of course, not forgetting the student volunteers that was also in my group. In total for my group, there was 4 locals and 7 Japanese. We exchanged email addresses and took some photos before parting. Hmm… But I wonder if they’ll really send me an email or send the photos to me. Let’s wait and see.

One thing is that, even though this was a short activity, being a volunteer or student helper can be quite interesting and fun too. I think the time spent there was quite positive and sets me in a good mood. Next month, I’ll need to bring another group of Japanese students around. But this time, it is graded. In fact, the next group of students is part of a project in my Japanese module. I think maybe I should memorize some sentences to decribe the school as an introductory speech. Haha…

Back to being focused 6 September, 2007

In the past months, on and off, I’ve been focused and working. The problem here is on and off, meaning that half the time, I’m not focused, and that’s the main cause for concern. Having come this far in my life, I’ve come to understand myself quite a bit and I do think that I’m a person who is easily distracted. I can be quite prone to undesirable stimulus from the environment, for example, people talking loudly, irritating people doing irritating things, internet being freely available in my workdesktop.

While typing, I just realized I’ve talked about these issues before. It has been a good 4 months since I last talked about this. I seems like the situation have improved somewhat, but still not to my desired levels. Recently, I did notice myself being more focused in my work, so I start to ask, what caused it? I traced it to some simple things that have been happening at my workplace. First, the internet isn’t working very well nowadays. It is lagging very very badly, making it difficult to find any online resources. Clicking the search button on google takes about 30 secs to render the results page. The school’s computer admin has admitted the problems and are ‘working to solve the connection outrages’. This may turn out to be a blessing in disguise after all.

The second thing I realized is that I may be a crunch time type of person. Meaning, I think that I work well under a competitive and deadline oriented environment. After lectures resumed these few weeks, I find myself having lots of readings and assignments to handle and this led to better time management. Whatever the case, I’ll just tap on this energy and keep moving forward.

Life’s Like That 3 September, 2007

As I walked around in the empty house, waiting for Dear to reach home from a day’s work, I gazed at the flats opposite mine and wondered silently: What do people look forward to at the end of the day’s work?  Why do people work?

Life’s like that, you work (hard) to satisfy the pleasures of life. For the less comfy ones, you work (hard) simply to keep life going. Ultimately, all of us need to work because we are in a real world.  Funny though, it seemed like simple facts, yet so hard to swallow that we are all the same.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not demoralised, just lamenting aloud that ultimately, I am choosing a common path. Yep, having been brought up in this society this way, we remain unable to extend our wings; we remain caged in the same one world.

But don’t you worry, this one world can still be an interesting playground, your spouse, your family, your friends, colleagues, everyone around you can be interesting.  In fact, the world has constantly been revolving, just that you have not joined in the revolution.  Time to ‘pack up your troubles in your old kit bag, and smile, smile, smile’.

Yep, Dear2 is back.  Running away is no courage.  Avoiding only dis-illusionize yourself.  To confront and conquer is the winner.

Are you your own champion?

- Dear2

Ps: To share, and to be shared with.  A wonderful world.
