Finding a beautiful seat on the bus 29 November, 2007

I dunno if many of you have encountered this before but… imagine this situation. You’ve just boarded a relatively crowded bus during rush hour (be it morning or evening). There are only 2 seats left on the bus, both sharing with a stranger beside. Now, there are some differences. The stranger next to the left seat is a beautiful young lady, slim, neatly dressed and lawfully occupying only her own half of the twin seat. The stranger next to the right seat is a grumpy old man, messy hair, overly tanned, stained clothes and has one leg occupying half the empty seat. Now if you are a girl, which seat will you choose? And if you are a boy?

I think the answer is straightforward. It doesn’t matter which gender the observer is, he/she will most definitely choose the seat next to the girl. Why? Here are some reasons.

  • There is a full seat next to the girl but only half a seat next to the guy.
  • Even if the guy’s leg isn’t stretching over the empty seat, girls are still generally of a smaller build than guys, so there will be more ’space’ if you choose to sit next to the girl.
  • It will make the whole bus ride more pleasant knowing there are ‘nice’ people/things around you. The environment *does* affect one’s mood.
  • At least you know girls normally dun emit odours.

As a result, pleasant looking girls will always find themselves having to share the bus seat with someone because they are simply too difficult to resist. Guys on the other hand will find themselves hogging both seats to themselves, especially if they are big sized, like to spread their legs over the empty seat, radiates odours/sweat, looks untidy. But of course, a handsome looking guy or a cute boy boy will probably suffer the same fate as the pretty girl; similarly, a seriously overweight girl that occupies one and a half seat or fierce looking lady will find themselves having both of the bus seats.

You realize that all I’m talking about here is exterior looks. Or rather, the image that you portray to others on a daily basis. First impression does count and very often you only have 2 seconds to make a first impression, with or without trying. Not judging a book by its cover is very difficult to achieve in practice. A pleasant looking person, guy or girl, really does have an advantage when dealing with people or events, so it becomes really important to look good everyday. Of course, once you have been attracted by the good image of the person, you would want to pry deeper to know his/her personality. If the pleasant girl you chose to sit next to on the bus suddenly fishes out her handphone and start blasting music like nobody’s business on the bus, then it is likely you would start regretting your decision to sit there.

You are now sitting on a bus. The person boarding the bus is an opportunity, an opportunity seeking a door to enter. You and the empty seat beside is a door. Everyone else has their own door. But who’s door is the most attractive? Who’s door makes the greatest impact in that 2 seconds? The opportunity will walk towards that door. Then and only then, that the host has a chance to demonstrate that he is not only all looks, but also full of substance.

Baking Muffins 25 November, 2007

It has been some weeks since Dear1 and Dear2 purchased our Tefal Oven. The oven was bought because Dear2 wanted to bake pastries, something that Dear2 has all along wanted to do, but because her parents’ home do not have an oven, hence was never ever able to try. Hence, Dear1 and Dear2 uanimously decided that an oven is a must have around in our new house.

But, to bake anything at all, you need oven gloves so that you don’t scald yourself. And not to forget the muffin tray if you are baking muffins. Of course you will need muffin cups as they gotto go hand in hand with the muffin tray. And oh, cake flour, bread flour, multi purpose flour, whatever flour for whatever purpose. And there’s eggs and butter and milk according to the recipe book. Well, you can’t do without yeast and baking powder and vanila essence too. And alamak, a weighing machine and timer and big bowls and rolling pin and mat, and shape cutter. What a lot of things that you need to have before you can start baking!

That was how Dear2 continued to procrastinate the baking, until that glove comes along, until we got the cake flour, until we bought Hershey’s chocolate chips during a promotion, until we made countless trips to Daiso to get the 2 big bowls, and finally when the eggs in the fridge turned 2 weeks old – this can’t procrastinate anymore!

So, nervously, Dear1 and Dear2 started to prepare the dough for the muffins. No mixer – we used human mixer going at medium-slow speed; No caster sugar – normal sugar will work for now; Not enough muffin tray – all right, the excess will have to go into a cake tray.

Bake bake bake, the muffins are finally ready. Very sweet, nope, it’s super sweet; a bit too dense, ok, the human mixer will have to beat a bit faster. But overall, it was yummy!!

Procrastination is always the easy way – excuses are easy to be made up, but the actual work always seems to be so hard. But… Is it really difficult? You just needs to get doing it. Afterall, what can be the worst possible scenario? Worst come to worst, the muffins are just not cooked enough to be edible, and you just gotto throw them away and re-bake again. It is not a big deal. Hee..

Is exercise a luxury? 17 November, 2007

Since we started working, it’s always waking up at 7am in the morning and returning home after 9pm. With such a schedule, is it really possible to exercise 3 days a week and maintain a healthy lifestyle? Sounds rather difficult.

This year’s marathon is just round the corner and we are starting to get panicky. After all, this is going to be our very first full marathon. Although we’ve started training several months ago, it was rather inconsistent. We jog like once a week, on a weekend, and sometimes skip a week becos we were too lazy. Lol. The distances we cover wasn’t bery encouraging either. In fact, I think we haven’t ran more than 10km in any of our training up till now. But seriously, at the speed that we’re running (about 4omins per 5km), a 10km run is going to take 1hr 20mins. Again, the question, is there enough time to do such a training regularly?

Ok, maybe it is possible on weekends. So that’s what we try to do now. We schedule 3 trainings a week, 2 on weekdays and 1 on weekends. The weekend training will be a longer run, maybe around 1hr30mins or more. The weekday run will be a shorter one, simply becos there is no time. It has been about 2 weeks since we started our 3 times a week intensive training program in preparation for the marathon. On weekdays, we try to reach home a bit earlier, at 8pm, and try to end our run by 9.30pm, followed by dinner, bath, relax and sleep. It’s do-able at the very least, but very exhausting.

Sometimes I really wonder, is exercising a luxury? What do people think of when they see a young couple like us jogging along the streets at night? Does working class people really have time to jog? One may argue that it boils down to effective time management. That may be true to a certain extent. But it really depends on your job scope. If my work is rather clerical in nature, than maybe yes, I can try to re-schedule my time. But if my work falls under the ‘professional’ category, then time just isn’t within my control anymore. It’s also about being responsible at work. Of course, I can just throw down whatever I’m doing and just go home at 5pm sharp. But how is that going to affect the people around me, the people who depended on my work? And if I’m really that irresponsible, then I think I’m not going to make it big no matter which company I work for.

So, my answer to my question (at this moment) is yes, exercise is a luxury. There are other things in life that has greater priority and greater need right now. But this is not an excuse not to exercise. It just means that we must work hard, work smart, break out and step towards a more luxurious lifestyle.

Ho ho ho! Christmas is coming… at least for retailers. Many shops are already pushing out their Christmas goods and selling them at sale prices. I’ve managed to spot some Morries products but I dun really know if they are new in the product line or maybe just new in the import line. Anyway, here are the pictures with indicative prices, most of them are on Christmas promotions and u know the place already. :D

Of interest, the Electric Air Pot is back with a 3.8L version. If you check back my previous posts, you would know that there are already quite a few versions of different capacities for this airpot. The rest are all very interesting and varied products. Thermo Pot looks just in time for a year end festive steam boat session. There are some more which I’ve seen on Yahoo auctions but have yet to see on the store shelves yet. For example, coffee maker and BBQ set. If and when I see, I’ll quickly take a snap shot for my collection.

21st Birthday Party 11 November, 2007

Dear1 and Dear2 attended one of Dear2’s colleague 21st birthday party the other day. 21st birthday have always been an important event in young Singaporeans’ lives. So for Dear1 and Dear2, we also celebrated our 21st birthdays 5 years ago – together. Since our birthdays fall on the same month, we chose a date that falls on a convenient weekend that month so that we can invites lots of guests to our party. At East Coast Park, we invited Dear1’s groups of friends, and Dear2’s groups of friends. The party was a BBQ event, purely BBQ, no catered food. And Dear1 and Dear2’s mums each prepared some homecook bee hoon and curry and finger foods and not to forget, the 21st birthday cake. I still remember the large birthday cake is in the shape of a key and it costs $60. What an old fashioned cake, haha. In total, we invite around 40 guests, and we were in command of the preparations ourselves (other family members serve as helpers).

5 years later today, as we attend other people’s parties, the fun seems different – is it the crowd, the food, or simply the games that we don’t play nowadays? The party itself seemed ceremonial, with everyone taking turns posing with the birthday girl and the birthday cake before the cake cutting and birthday song(s) singing. And after the cake cutting, everyone seemed eager to go home, oh bother. If such is the case, how is the elusive 21st birthday any different from every other birthdays?

Rowenta Moveling Hair Dryer 11 November, 2007

Hair drying has been a persistent problem for Dear2 since a very very long time ago. Dear2 didn’t have a hair dryer in her old home. So every time there is a need to wash her hair late at night, her bed time will also be similarly postponed by one and a half hours to allow for her hair to dry naturally. This happens in our new home as well. Some times, after a day’s work, one just wants to sleep early. But imagine reaching home at 9.30pm, stepping out of the bathroom at 10.30pm and then not having the luxury of going to bed any time, but instead having to wait until 12am for the hair to dry. I think this is one constraint we would rather do without and indeed there’s something that can be done to improve this situation. Get a hair dryer!

And that we did, at Courts Causeway Point. Why Courts, you ask? Because we have the Courts voucher from our house warming party. The irritating salesman tried to sell us some expensive high tech hair dryer that blows ions that is suppose to make your hair softer. Blah! I’m not falling for stupid sales tricks. We’re there to get what we need. So after browsing through the hair dryers on sale, we decided on some of the features that we require. First, it must have several different blowing speeds. Second, it must be able to blow hot and cold air. Third, it must be easy to operate. Finally, we decided on this Rowenta Moveling Hair Dryer. It’s a simple hair dryer with 3 blowing speeds, a cool air button for switching between hot and cool air at any speed. And it’s easy to use because these are the only 2 buttons on the machine. There’s one additional feature, that is the air control system. At the nozzle of the hair dryer, there are 2 flaps that can be opened or closed depending on how you rotate it. When it is closed, the nozzle becomes smaller and the air flow becomes tighter and more suitable for styling, much like those you see in salons. The hair dryer is rated at 1500W and costs $30.90. An important feature that I saw was that the main body of the blower unit is actually cool to touch. This came as a surprise for me because for the old hair dryer I used at my parents’ place, the blower body is burning hot during operations and there’s no way you can touch it. In fact, I think it was rather dangerous. Maybe this insulated body feature have become a mainstay in hair dryer technology, I dunno.

Another thing that came as a surprise for me was, the hair dryers all came from big name players, like Rowenta, Philips, Panasonic, Braun, etc. There was no sign of Sona, Iona, Morries, Toyomi, etc. I suspect prices may be much cheaper for these brands, but no point comparing prices now since we’ve already bought ours. So far, the hair dryer is working quite well. The wind speed for speed 1 is a little too slow but speed 2 is a little too fast. I think we just need some time to get used to it that’s all. Typically, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to thoroughly dry Dear2’s long hair. So from now on, no more waiting for the hair to dry on sleepy nights. And of course, next time we’re going for any parties, we can start exploring the styling capabilities of this hair dryer.

The Art of Prioritization 4 November, 2007

Omg. It has been weeks since Dear2 wrote that Dear2 is back blogging, but there has been no posts since then.

Life is hectic. Or rather, Dear2 has been feeling hectic for the longest time around. Never-ending work to do, forever piling laundry to wash, endless keeping of the house neat (and clean – dust just keep piling up despite windows closed), not enough time to spend with Dear1….. It seems that Dear2 is feeling the strain of life. Time not enough. But, if you ask Dear2 what she has been spending her time on, she is unable to exactly list them down.

Time management. Are we spending too much time on insignificant stuff, and hence neglecting the important ones? It seems to be so, if you do not know how your time is spent.

The 7 Habits tells us that we spend our time doing 4 kinds of things.

1. Urgent but not important.

2. Urgent and important.

3. Not urgent and not important.

4. Not urgent but important.

Obviously we ought to spend time on the important things. Reflect upon yourself if you do not know why important things should come first. But very often, we tend to focus on the urgent things. Forever tending to urgent things make you become a ‘firefighter’. Do you want to be one?

Prioritization. This is the act of listing down the list of things or tasks to accomplish and planning and scheduling them. Have you done it already?
